heardbound mare

I have a mare that picks the alpha mare and then becomes the the protector. She goes crazy when the alpha mare is removed from the herd. She runs the fence until the mare returns. I haven't seen this and want some clue what to do to stop the behavior correctly and quickly. Any ideas?
